Alex Gurney

Alex Gurney (born September 4, 1974 in Newport Beach, California) is an American professional auto racing driver, currently driving for GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing in the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series. Gurney drives the No. 99 GAINSCO Auto Insurance Pontiac Riley, pairing with Jon Fogarty. He and Fogarty won the 2007 Grand-Am Rolex Series Daytona Prototype drivers' championship.

2007 championship campaign

Gurney won the pole for the 2007 Rolex 24 At Daytona, and won his first Grand-Am race, the 2007 Mexico City 400k, in March 2007. Along with his co-driver, Jon Fogarty, the pair went on to capture seven wins and 10 poles, setting a new series record for most victories in a single season en route to the driver and team championships. Among his most spectacular drives to victory were an hour-long, wheel-to-wheel duel with Colin Braun at Barber Motorsports Park, and a textbook penultimate-lap pass on David Donohue for the win at Infineon Raceway.

The youngest son of former Formula 1 driver Dan Gurney, Alex previously competed in the Midwest Skip Barber Formula Dodge Series, Barber Dodge Pro Series, Toyota Atlantic Championship, and British Formula 3 Championship. He is happily married to his wife, Colleen, with whom he welcomed his first child, a girl named Natalie, in 2007.
