was a town located in Akan district, Kushiro Subprefecture, Hokkaidō.

As of September 30, 2004 it had an estimated population of 6,518 and an area of 739.25 km². The name comes from an Ainu word meaning "Eternal" or "unchanging".

History

  • 1887 The main town hall for Akan District is established
  • 1923 Becomes a second-class municipality
  • 1937 Tsurui Village split off
  • 1940 Akan becomes a first-class municipality
  • 1957 Akan Village becomes Akan Town
  • 11th, Oct. 2005 Akan was merged into new Kushiro City
