Aayla Secura

Aayla Secura is a fictional character in the Star Wars universe. In the films Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, she was portrayed by Amy Allen. The character was created for Dark Horse Comics by John Ostrander and Jan Duursema. She appears primarily in the Star Wars: Republic and Star Wars: Clone Wars series.

History

Early years

In the Republic series, Secura is discovered on her home planet of Ryloth by the Jedi Quinlan Vos, who trains her as his padawan. While on Ryloth, her uncle, Pol, robs her and Vos of their memories. Then unaware of her Force potential, she produces a huge outburst, killing her uncle. She then flees the planet.

She falls under the spell of ancient Anzati Dark Jedi Volfe Karkko, who is being held prisoner on Kiffex. In a trance, she frees Karkko and attacks Vos. At this time, she regains her memory and realizes what is happening. After this conflict, Vos and Secura are separated. Jedi Master Tholme takes over her training, and she soon becomes a Jedi Knight.

Attack of the Clones

Aayla appears twice in Attack of the Clones, as she is seen while Obi-Wan Kenobi is going to visit Yoda and the younglings. The next time she is seen is at the film's climactic battle scene, in which she is one of the 200 Jedi sent to Geonosis to rescue Obi-Wan, Padmé Amidala, and Anakin Skywalker, and one of the few survivors of the ensuing battle with Count Dooku's Separatist forces. After the battle, Secura and Jedi Ylenic It'kla go undercover for a mission to Corellia.

Clone Wars

In the Star Wars: Republic series of comic books, Secura once again goes undercover while trying to find Vos on The Wheel space station. She finds Vos, who is distraught about what he believes to be his failure to prevent the Battle of Geonosis. Secura then reassures her Master that the battle had not been his fault, and they gather enough information to predict the attack on Kamino. Secura flies a starfighter during that battle.

In an episode of the animated micro-series Star Wars: Clone Wars, Secura is sent to Hypori. She is one of the first to encounter General Grievous, and is one of the few survivors. In another episode, she is seen being treated by clones, along with Shaak Ti and Ki-Adi-Mundi, after a fierce battle with Grievous.

Later, she goes on a mission to Devaron, and wears a disguise once again. She is part of a Jedi taskforce to investigate Separatist raids on the Galactic Republic's supply lines. While on this mission, a Devaronian Senator is killed. Aayla, The Dark Woman, and Tholme go down to the planet. While there, they are attacked by Aurra Sing, and Secura engages her in battle. On this mission, along with the Battle of Kamino, Aayla begins to develop a close relationship with Kit Fisto.

Months later (once again portrayed in Republic), Secura and Commander Bly are sent to Honoghr. There, Secura discovers Vos, who is also looking for the same thing she was: the SIP. Together they find it, but Vos will not let her have it. They get into a struggle in which Vos succumbs to his anger and the dark side. Aayla drops her weapon, and Vos is unable to kill his protegé and friend. Bly takes advantage of Vos' indecision and wounds him. He and Secura then escape.

While searching for the second Sith, Secura and Tholme go to Anzat and later Saleucami, where the Separatists are building an army of Morgukai clone troopers. She flies a starfighter in the ensuing battle, which lasts for five months. When it finally ends, Secura and Bly are sent to find Barriss Offee on Felucia. Their mission is to stop the Commerce Guild from taking over the planet.

Revenge of the Sith

Secura appears in a few scenes in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Her appearance in the film was later connected to her appearances in EU material.

During the mission on Felucia, she was consulting with Jedi Masters Mace Windu and Yoda via a holographic communication device, when Commander Cody reported Grievous's death from Utapau. Not much later, Order 66 is issued and Bly is ordered to kill her. She was shot in the back by clone troopers then finished off as she lay dying. A clone trooper states in the video game Star Wars: Battlefront II that he hopes that "her death was quick, she earned that much"; Secura had saved him and his comrades from being eradicated, and also helped them maintain their sanity while they suffered from the planet's flesh-eating viruses. She was also shown using two lightsabers in the game, implying that she is a Niman/Jarkai user.

Depiction in Star Wars films

The Aayla Secura character was included in Attack of the Clones after George Lucas noticed a painting of the character near the end of that film's production. Lucas was so impressed by the artwork that he decided to include the character in the film. Amy Allen, a production assistant at Industrial Light & Magic, was given the role, and digitally added to scenes in the Jedi Temple and during the climactic battle on Geonosis. Amy Allen reprised the role for Revenge of the Sith and was even given a few lines of dialogue, although these were cut from the final film. John Ostrander had originally planned to kill the character off during her first appearance in Jedi: Twilight but he was convinced by Jan Duursema's daughter to let her live. Rather than dying in the comic media for which she was written, Secura lived to have many more adventures before being murdered by two Clone Troopers in Revenge of the Sith.
