• World Series - Cincinnati Reds defeat Chicago White Sox, 5 games to 3. Even before game one there are rumors that some White Sox have agreed to throw the Series to the Reds, for payment from gamblers. This will explode a year later in the Black Sox Scandal.
• Babe Ruth hits 29 home runs for the Boston Red Sox, breaking the single-season record of 27 set by Ned Williamson in 1884

• The Florida State League is founded with teams in Bartow, Bradenton, Lakeland, Orlando, Sandford and Tampa
• Intercounty Baseball League is formed in Ontario, Canada with teams in Stratford, Guelph, Kitchener and Galt

Boxing

• July 4: Jack Dempsey becomes heavyweight champion of the world, knocking out Jess Willard, defending champion, in four rounds

• The Green Bay Packers established in Green Bay, Wisconsin — the oldest surviving professional American football team

• Competitive football resumes after the end of World War I.
• The First Division is expanded from 20 to 22 teams; Chelsea are spared relegation, while Arsenal controversially win promotion from the Second Division despite only finishing fifth, at the expense of rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
• The Second Division is also expanded from 20 teams to 22, bringing the total number of League sides to 44

Horse racing

• May 10 - Sir Barton wins the kentucky Derby

Sir Barton would eventually became the first horse to win the Triple Crown.

• February 22–March 6 - In the first best-of-seven series, the Montreal Canadiens defeat the Ottawa Senators 4–1 to win the National Hockey League (NHL) championship.
• March - The Seattle Metropolitans win the Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA) championship.
• March 19–30 - In the Stanley Cup championship series held in Seattle, the Montreal Canadiens and Seattle Metropolitans both win two games before the final is cancelled after all of the Montreal players contract Spanish flu.
• March - The Hamilton Tigers win the Allan Cup.
• March - The University of Toronto Schools win the inaugural Memorial Cup Canadian national junior championship.
