water glass

water glass

Water glass also known as liquid glass, and more technically known, sodium silicate or sodium metasilicate, is colorless and transparent glass-like substance that is available in both liquid as well as solid form. Water glass was discovered in 1825 by the chemist Von Fuchs who treated silicic acid with an alkali. Water glass is used in a myriad of substances and for variety of reasons. It can be used for water treatment, auto repair, fire protestant, metal repair and home brewing. It can also be used as a detergent and as a way to preserve eggs. Water glass is the key ingredient in the toy magic rocks or magic crystals. By combining water glass with different metals each metal creates a different color stalagmite from the resulting mix.
