The Unblinking Eye

The Unblinking Eye is a fourth season episode of the television series Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

Plot summary

In this episode, Detectives Goren and Eames investigate the murder of a young actress gunned down on the street after an evening out with her boyfriend.

At first, Goren and Eames focus their attention on a woman who had previously shown an unusual interest in the victim's boyfriend, also an actor, who was wounded in the shooting. But further evidence leads them to realise other people could have been involved. The list of suspects include the grieving boyfriend, who seems too good to be true lead, as well as his best friend, who never excelled as an actor.

Finally, Goren and Eames down another path, one where the key to exposing the truth about the present depends on exposing the lies of the past.

[While observing a suspect in the interrogation room]
Goren: She rages on, in spite of all the evidence against her.
Eames: She could confess, but where's the fun in that?

Goren: When was the last time you went on a treasure hunt?
Eames: How 'bout never.

Eames: Most guys freak out if their exes send them even a Christmas card.

Carver: If only he had gone blank on that street corner.
Eames [scratches head]: Oh, but then they wouldn't get to be celebrity perps.

  • In this episode, Matt Damon appears as himself in an unbilled cameo. Although he does not appear on screen, we do hear his voice, and he is referred to by other characters as "Mr. Damon".
  • When the detectives look deeper into the case, they learn that the key, nevertheless, might turn on their probe of Geocaching – an outdoor treasure-hunting game in which the participants use a GPS receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers.
