A
triose is a
monosaccharide containing three
carbon atoms. There are only two trioses, an
aldotriose (
glyceraldehyde) and a
ketotriose (
dihydroxyacetone). Trioses are important in
respiration. Namely, lactic acid and pyruvic acid are derived from aldotriose and ketotriose, respectively.
