Money, Mississippi

Money is an unincorporated Mississippi Delta community in Leflore County, Mississippi, United States, near Greenwood. It has a population of less than 100, down from around 400 in the 1950s when a cotton mill still operated in the community. It is on a railroad line and lies on the Tallahatchie River. The community is part of the Greenwood, Mississippi Micropolitan Statistical Area.

Money became infamous in the U.S. civil rights movement after Emmett Till, a 14 year old native of Chicago, Illinois was killed there after allegedly making suggestive remarks to a white woman in 1955 while visiting family for the summer. It was only his second time in the South. Two white men were acquitted by an all-white jury but confessed to the killings in a magazine interview four months later. Till's mother insisted on an open casket funeral and allowed news photographs of the body to be published, raising Northern awareness of lynching.
