tegmentum of rhombencephalon

Notoplax is a genus of chitons in the family Acanthochitonidae, endemic to New Zealand, South Africa, and Australia including Lord Howe Island.

These chitons are small to medium sized, with a wide fleshy girdle, the tegmentum of the shell small, the sutural laminae wide, and the insertion plates moderately broad. The head valve has five slits, the median valves have one slit on each side, and the tail valve is multi-slit. The sculpture is usually granulose, except for Notoplax cuneata which is almost smooth. The girdle varies from almost smooth, to completely spiculose, with larger tufts at the sutural pores.
