Nunthorpe Stakes

The Nunthorpe Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race in the United Kingdom open to thoroughbreds which are two-years-old or above. It is run over a distance of 5 furlongs (1,006 metres) at York Racecourse, and it takes place annually during the Ebor Festival meeting in August.

In its present form the race dates back to 1922, although before then it had been a lower grade selling race since 1903.

From 1976 to 1989 the race was sponsored by the bookmaker William Hill and was run as the William Hill Sprint Championship. It has been subsequently sponsored by Keeneland (1990–94), Persimmon plc (1998–99), Victor Chandler (2000–06) and Coolmore Stud (since 2007).

The 2008 running was transferred to the July Course at Newmarket, having been cancelled at York due to a waterlogged track.

Blue Siren finished first in 1994 but was relegated to second place following a Stewards' Inquiry.
