Snuggle is the brand name of a fabric softener sold by Unilever in the United States and Canada. It features a teddy bear (named the Snuggle Bear) as its mascot. The product is available in sheets or liquid (in concentrate and non-concentrate forms).
Mascot
Since 1983, the Snuggle Bear has been Unilever's mascot for its Snuggle line of fabric softener. The puppet was created by
Kermit Love, the creator of the costume of
Big Bird and
Snuffleupagus from
Sesame Street. The voice was originally provided by
Corinne Orr. In a 2006 radio interview,
Micky Dolenz stated that he is the current voice of Snuggle.
Recalls
In 2001, 150,000 Snuggle "Teeny Bean Bears" included with the sales of the product were recalled because the pom-pom of their night caps could detach and pose a
choking hazard to babies and toddlers.
In 2002, 4 million stuffed bears distributed with Snuggle fabric softener were recalled when they too were determined to form a choking hazard to small children, because the eyes and nose could come off.
In popular culture
A parody of the Snuggle Bear appears in commercials for the action game
BattleTanx. It opens like a typical Snuggle commercial when Snuggle notices a tank coming toward his house, and leaps out of the way when the laundry room he's in is demolished. He is then shown being chased by the tank through the fields, missing an ear and an arm; the tank fires a bomb in front of him and his arm catches fire. In the end, he is shown burnt and run over, coughing up a piece of cotton. Another commercial continues the story, showing the damaged Snuggle being rebuilt with mechanical parts in his body by scientists and trained like a "meta-bear", only to be hit by the tank again.
Another parody of Snuggle appears in the Robot Chicken episode "Massage Chair", named "Cuddles". Cuddles appears in a man's laundry room to promote his fabric softner, when the man takes to his softness and rapes him in his bathroom twice. Cuddles appears different to Snuggle in that his head is slightly more plump, his snout yellow.
