Shimada, city (1990 pop. 73,810), Shizuoka prefecture, E central Honshu, Japan, on the Oi River. It is a distribution point for timber and rice and a center for woodworking, chemical, and mechanical industries.
The city was founded on January 1, 1948. It is twinned with Richmond, California in the USA. There is currently an exchange program for students of Shimada to be hosted by students at Richmond, California and vice versa.
