Self-excitation is a method used by
electrical generators to use some of the generator's output to generate the
magnetic field used by the generator. Instead of having large
permanent magnets, self-excited generators have extra coils that either boost the generator's permanent magnets or completely replace them.
This achieves two purposes:
- Reduces the physical size (or cost) of the generator.
- Provides a means to easily control (regulate) the generator's output.
