Sclerotin

Sclerotin

[skleer-uh-tin, skler-]
Sclerotin is a mixture of protein substances that forms the cuticles of insects. It provides physical toughness to the insect's chitinous exoskeleton. As it forms, sclerotin becomes a hard, horn-like substance with a range of yellow-brown colors. In combination with keratin, this substance allowed insects to evolve for existence on the land and to develop wings.
