São José do Rio Preto is a city and county (município) in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. County Area: 434.10 square km; population (2004): approx. 446,000.
The city was founded on March 19 1852, by João Bernardino de Seixas Ribeiro. It is the commercial, industrial, and agricultural center of the Northwestern region of the State. The city is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of São José do Rio Preto.
