San Fran Dhammaram Temple
is the only Thai Temple in the City of San Francisco
San Fran Dhammaram Temple was established in June 24, 2002 by Venerable Acariya Thoon Kippapanyo. Ratima Chintarod, a staunch follower of Acariya Thoon, provided a location that would serve as a meeting place, community for discussion of dhamma
, and institution for the dispensation of Buddhism. San Fran Dhammaram Temple opened its doors to the public on September 4, 2002. The temple's opening ceremonies were held by Venerable Acariya Thoon Kippapanyo and Venerable Praraj Wachirasophon of Wat Buddharatanaram
Acariya Thoon first visited America in 1987. On that visit, as well during many subsequent trips to the US, he had been invited to teach dhamma. During that time, there weren't any definite locations established for the meeting, education, and communal discussion of dhamma. As a consequence, Acariya Thoon's followers deliberated and decided to establish a central location that would facilitate these purposes. Thus, the San Francisco Thai Temple was founded.
The temple's attendance has been growing rapidly. To accommodate this expansion, San Fran Dhammaram Temple will relocate to a new property in the Sunset district late 2008.
Venerable Acariya Thoon
Teachings are inspired by Venerable Acariya Thoon, also known as Luang Por Thoon Kippapanyo. His main focus is on developing the correct perception of the truth, sammaditthi. San Fran Dhammaram Temple is one of Acariya Thoon's U.S. institutions founded for the development of true insight as well as the dispensation of dhamma and Buddhism to American practitioners.
In 1998, Saranya Thian-Ngern (Mae Chee Yo) established a center for practicing dhamma in South San Francisco, CA. In 2000, KPY (named after Kippapanyo) was relocated and established on 235 acres of land in Redwood Valley, CA. KPY now serves as both a retreat location as well as a center for dhamma training in the style of Venerable Acariya Thoon Kippapanyo.
New York Dhammaram Temple
Also founded by Venerable Acariya Thoon Kippapanyo, New York Dhammaram is located in Flushing, NY.
