BBC World News , formerly known as The World Today is a current affairs news programme produced by BBC World News and broadcast daily in a simulcast with BBC One and BBC News 24 in the United Kingdom. It aired in various formats since 1994 and was the flagship programme of BBC World News until the launch of World News Today, which follows a similar format, but broadcast later in the day.
The programme was originally broadcast several times a day, but disappeared from screens in 1999, when the BBC World Service adapted the programme name for their new flagship morning programme at the time of the BBC News relaunch. It returned in 2001, and was broadcast once a day as a European breakfast programme, with news, sport and a half hour edition of World Business Report.
As part of the general relaunch of BBC News on April 21 2008, The World Today was rebranded as BBC World News, appearing the same as a standard bulletin to viewers of BBC World News but subtly different for viewers in the UK.
Lucy Hockings joined the programme replacing David Eades in 2006. Eades had left to present the late morning bulletins on BBC World.
Martine Dennis was the main Friday & stand-in presenter of the programme, however, when she is not available any member of the BBC World presenting team will present and has led to presenters including Kirsty Lang, David Jessel, Lindsey Brancher, Mike Embley and Jonathan Charles and Tim Willcox standing in.
On Business, the main stand-in presenters were Manisha Tank, Tanya Beckett, Jamie Robertson, Aaron Heslehurst and very occasionally Sara Coburn.
