"Counting Out Time" is a song by progressive rock band Genesis off of their 1974 album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. It was the first single to be released from the album, though it did not make a showing on any charts.
The song is an R&B-flavored pop tune which depicts The Lamb's main character, Rael, remembering his first sexual experience with a girl. The lyrics describe his purchase of a book, Erogenous Zones and the Difficult Problem of How to Find Them, and his constant reliance on the book as he attempts to arouse his girlfriend – with disastrous results. Frustrated, he decides to return the book to the book store.
"Counting Out Time" was one of the three songs included from The Lamb on Genesis' 3-disc compilation, Platinum Collection. It was also added to the 2007 re-release of Turn It On Again: The Hits Tour Edition making it the only track from The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway on the compilation (not including the 1999 remake of The Carpet Crawlers).
