I Know You Got Soul (Eric B. & Rakim song)

"I Know You Got Soul" is a single by hip hop duo Eric B. & Rakim from their album Paid in Full (1987). Allmusic's Steve Huey wrote that the song "single-handedly kicked off hip-hop's infatuation with James Brown samples". The track's production contains "digitized cymbal crashes, breathing sounds, and a bumping bass line.

The song samples "I Know You Got Soul" by Bobby Byrd, "You'd Like It Too" by Funkadelic, "The Grunt" by The J.B.'s, "I Want You Back" by The Jackson 5, "Got to Be Real" by Cheryl Lynn, "Pussyfooter" by Jackie Robinson, "Ain't Nobody" by Rufus, "Ashley's Roachclip" by Soul Searchers, "Last Night Changed It All (I Really Had a Ball)" by Esther Williams, and "Greedy G" by the Brentford All-Stars. British band MARRS sampled the line, "Pump up the volume", for their number one UK single, "Pump Up the Volume".

Eric B. and Rakim sampled the record on some of their subsequent recordings, including "Follow the Leader" and "Microphone Fiend". Q magazine ranked "I Know You Got Soul" at number one on their "30 Best Hip Hop Songs and a survey by Top40-Charts.com ranked it at number 67 on a similar list. Rolling Stone ranked it at number 386 on "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time".
