Nicoya Peninsula, Guanacaste and Puntarenas provs., W Costa Rica, separating the Pacific Ocean from the Gulf of Nicoya. About 75 mi (120 km) long and 19-37 mi (30-60 km) wide, it is Costa Rica's largest peninsula. The Pacific coast possesses many fine beaches and is a popular resort area. The town of Nicoya, probably the first Spanish settlement (c.1530) in Costa Rica, is a transportation and commercial center for the peninsula. The peninsula is linked to the mainland by highway and by ferry.

It measures about 85 mi (140 km) from northwest to southeast. Descendants of the pre-Columbian Chorotega-Mangues Indians reside in villages on the peninsula.

It is located at . It varies from 19 to wide and is approximately long, and forms the largest peninsula in the country. It is known for its beaches and is a popular tourist destination. The main transport and commercial centre in the region is Nicoya, one of the oldest settlements in Costa Rica.

There are a number of nature reserves and wildlife refuges such as Cabo Blanco, Camaronal, Cueva Murcielago, Curú, La Ceiba, Romelia and the Diria National Park, as well as the projects on the islands of the adjacent Gulf of Nicoya.
