Since taking office, she has worked to eliminate the previous divisions among the colleges of UC (such as by creating a single university commencement) and has continuously championed UC|21, an academic plan which has redefined UC as a "new urban research university" for the 21st century. Zimpher is strongly disliked by many Bearcat basketball fans who were offended by the forced buy-out of basketball coach Bob Huggins (who had been arrested for driving under the influence) . The resignation of Huggins was announced on August 24, 2005,. Mick Cronin was named the new head coach on March 23, 2006,. The Bearcats played the entire 2005-2006 basketball season under interim head coach Andy Kennedy. The timing of Huggins' exit caused several recruits who had agreed to play for UC to switch to other schools,. The loss of recruits was compounded by spending the 2005-2006 season under an interim coach, during which time virtually no recruiting took place. These setbacks decimated the talent level of the team which went on to be (2-14) in Big East Conference play during the 2006-2007 season. On the other hand, the image of the university had been adversely affected by Huggin's tenure and many supported, or even applauded, her decision to remove Coach Huggins, because they believe he exemplified poor leadership and character. His removal was seen by many as a move to restore the University's honor and credibility.
