MBTA is the acronym for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, the public transportation system covering the Boston area that operates the bus, subway, light rail and ferry systems. It is commonly referred to by its short name "The T" and it is known by its logo featuring a black letter T in a white circle with a thick black outline; indeed, the symbol is ubiquitous in the greater Boston area.
The T consumes more electricity than any other entity in Massachusetts and is the largest consumer of alternative fuels thanks to its compressed natural gas (CNG) fleet of vehicles. More than 1.5 million passengers use the system on weekdays with almost 600,000 of those being on the subway alone, making it the fourth busiest system in the United States behind the subways of New York City and Washington, D.C. and the "L" of Chicago.
