Lumazine synthase

Lumazine synthase (LS) is a protein enzyme (also known as riboflavin synthase) which catalyses the penultimate step in the synthesis of riboflavin.

This protein is found in bacteria, archaea, plants and fungi, with a number of different quaternary structures. However each of these proteins is homologous, sharing a common subunit fold.

Icosahedral (60 subunit) assemblies are found in spinach, Bacillus subtilis, and Aquifex aeolicus while pentameric (5 subunit) assemblies are found in Brucella abortus, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and certain fungi.
