Lakeshore, Ontario

Lakeshore is a town in southwestern Ontario, Canada on Lake St. Clair. It is located in Essex County. The town was incorporated in 1999 by amalgamating the separate townships of Lakeshore, Rochester, Tilbury North and Tilbury West.

According to the Canada 2006 Census:

  • Population: 33,245 (in 2001: 28,746)
  • % Change (2001-2006): +15.7%
  • Dwellings: 12,368
  • Area (km².): 530.32
  • Density (persons per km².): 62.7

Lakeshore also has a significant concentration of Franco-Ontarians, and is one of only three communities in Southern Ontario (excluding Eastern Ontario) where francophones, as a percentage of the community's population, exceed the provincial average of five per cent. (The other two are Welland and Penetanguishene.) The community's hockey team is the Belle River Canadiens who play in Great Lakes Junior C League.
