It is slowly revealed Leilani is in deadly danger, she believes her insane father, Preston Maddoc had murdered her brother and soon, but not yet, will murder Leilani as well. Her mother is little help, being a hopeless drug addict.
A subplot, which soon ties into the main story, involves a young boy, who later identifies himself as Curtis Hammond, on the run from entities who had killed his family. Curtis believes that he cannot stop anywhere to ask for help, as anyone he talks to will be killed simply for interacting with him.
