Kimball, Fiske (Sidney Fiske Kimball), 1888-1955, American architect and writer, b. Newton, Mass. He was professor of architecture and fine arts at the Univ. of Michigan (1912-19) and of art and architecture at the Univ. of Virginia (1919-23) and was in charge of the fine arts department, New York Univ. (1923-25). From 1925 until his retirement in 1955 he was director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and was responsible for the acquisition of many important collections. Much of his architectural work consisted of the restoration of old houses, e.g., of Monticello, the Jefferson home, near Charlottesville, and Stratford, the seat of the Lees, both in Virginia. With G. H. Edgell he wrote A History of Architecture (1918). He was also the author of Domestic Architecture of the American Colonies (1922), American Architecture (1928), and The Creation of the Rococo (1943).

Kimball, Sumner Increase, 1834-1923, organizer of the U.S. Life-Saving Service, b. Lebanon, Maine. A lawyer, he became (1871) head of the revenue marine service of the Treasury Dept., and his investigations into shipwrecks along the Atlantic coast led to a reorganization of lifesaving methods. Kimball commanded the Life-Saving Service from its inception in 1878 until it became part of the U.S. Coast Guard in 1915. He wrote Organization and Methods of the U.S. Life Saving Service (1889) and Joshua James, Life Saver (1909).

Kimball, William Wirt, 1848-1930, American naval officer, b. Paris, Maine, grad. Annapolis, 1869. One of the first to serve on torpedo boats, he did much in the 1880s to develop magazine and machine guns, and he designed armored cars. In the 90s he did important work in the development of the submarine, and in the Spanish-American War, having organized the navy's first torpedo-boat flotilla, he commanded the Atlantic torpedo-boat flotilla. Kimball was made rear admiral in 1908, and in 1909 he commanded the expeditionary forces sent to Nicaragua. He retired from active duty in 1910.

Kimball is a city in Stearns County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 635 at the 2000 census. It is part of the St. Cloud Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.4 square miles (3.6 km²), all of it land.

Minnesota State Highways 15, 24, and 55 are the main routes in the community.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 635 people, 262 households, and 165 families residing in the city. The population density was 459.0 people per square mile (177.7/km²). There were 280 housing units at an average density of 202.4/sq mi (78.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.64% White, 0.16% African American, 0.63% Native American, 0.94% Asian, and 0.63% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.57% of the population. 53.5% were of German, 9.0% Irish, 7.6% Swedish and 6.1% Norwegian ancestry according to Census 2000.

There were 262 households out of which 30.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.0% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.0% were non-families. 31.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 3.01.

In the city the population was spread out with 26.9% under the age of 18, 10.6% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 18.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 89.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $34,219, and the median income for a family was $40,455. Males had a median income of $28,125 versus $21,875 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,971. About 5.9% of families and 9.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.6% of those under age 18 and 14.4% of those age 65 or over.
