Churchill College Junior Common Room or Churchill JCR for short, is the student body for undergraduates at Churchill College, Cambridge. The JCR was established soon after the founding of the college, spurred on by the enthusiasm of Dick Tizard, the College's Senior Tutor.

National Representation Campaign

In the sixties, during a time of student uprising, Churchill JCR led the NUS in taking the Cambridge Town Clerk to the High Court to overturn a 19th century precedent that denied students the right to vote in their University Towns and resulted in the Representation of the People Act 1969 extending suffrage to 18-20 year olds.

Governance

The Junior Common Room currently consists of about 400 members. Key issues are discussed in open meetings, but day-to-day issues are resolved by the President and the Committee members.

The statutes of Churchill College state that there shall be two undergraduate representatives on the College Governing Body and the College Council. The President is an ex-officio member of both. The other representative must be a member of the JCR Committee, but is elected in a separate election run by the JCR.
