Jongkind

Jongkind

Jongkind, Johann Barthold, 1819-91, Dutch landscape painter and etcher. He studied in Paris with Isabey. Jongkind's work was a transition between the Barbizon school and the impressionists, and he notably influenced the latter group. He painted chiefly in France, though many of his scenes are Dutch. He was a fine watercolorist and one of the foremost etchers of the 19th cent. In these media he achieved a fresh rendering of atmospheric effects, especially in his marine scenes. Jongkind is represented in the Rijks Museum and in the Louvre.
