J. C. Penney is a chain of department stores that operates in all 50 of the United States, as well as Puerto Rico. The chain also offers catalog sales nationwide and is an Internet retailer. Traditionally, J. C. Penney stores could be found downtown in almost any mid-sized city, but today, most of the stores are located in large shopping malls. Most often, J. C. Penney has anchor stores in suburban malls.
The chain sells everything from clothes to jewelry. Its closest competitors for many years have been other mid-range chain stores that sold mid-scale merchandise, such as Kmart, Target and Sears, but in recent years, J. C. Penney has introduced a broad line of upscale merchandise, competing more with department store chains like Macy's.
