Intrust Bank Arena
(known as Sedgwick County Arena
during early planning stages) is a 15,000-seat multi-purpose arena
in Wichita, Kansas
currently under construction. It should be completed in January 2010. Once completed, it will be home to the Wichita Thunder ice hockey
team and possibly a potential reincarnation of the Wichita Stealth arena football
team. It is also expected that there will be a push by Wichita officials to lure the University of Kansas
and Kansas State University
, two of the state's three Division I basketball programs, to play one home game each year in the state's largest city.
The arena is budgeted to cost $185 million and is financed by a temporary, $.01 increase in the county sales tax. The increase, which expired after 30 months in December 2007, was approved by voters 52% to 48% in November 2004.
According to The Wichita Eagle (October 12, 2006), the arena will seat 15,000.
On January 10, 2008, the city announced it had reached a 25-year, $8.75 million naming rights deal deal with Intrust Bank, which complements a 20-year, $3 million deal with Cessna Aircraft Company to name an adjacent outdoor plaza, and a councourse area deal with Spirit AeroSystems.
