haunt thoughts

[hawnt, hahnt; for 10 also hant]

HAUNT was a straightforward but engagingly irreverent text-based mainframe game. It was created in OPS4 language in 1979 by John Laird.

You explore a haunted house and encounter clues, wacky creatures and items throughout, including:

  1. rampaging moose
  2. elevator to nowhere
  3. please add...

The game ran on the old DEC-20 mainframes. Copies exist only on ancient tape drives in a university somewhere; although the author considered rewriting it in an updated language, that apparently did not happen.

Laird is now a professor at University of Michigan.
