How I Got My Shrunken Head
is the 39th book in R. L. Stine's Goosebumps
series about a boy named Marcus who receives a shrunken head from his aunt Beena, who explores jungles
for a living. Marcus is taken to the jungle island of Baladora from which his shrunken head came and finds out Beena's colleagues Richard, Carolyn, and Kareen Hawklings all want her dead so they can get the "jungle magic" from the shrunken head.
The book was first released in January of 1996.
How I Got My Shrunken Head was adapted into an episode of the Goosebumps television series
. The episode was basically the same plot as the book, except for the ending. In the book version, Marcus takes the shrunken head to school and as he's walking, the shrunken head tells him to let him talk about their jungle adventure to the rest of the class. In the TV version, Marcus uses his jungle magic (which actually was given to Marcus by his aunt when he was a child and was not meant to be activated until Marcus was a teenager) to shrink Aunt Beena's colleagues. Marcus then keeps the shrunken colleagues as pets and tells them he'll turn them back to normal size when Aunt Beena visits him again at age sixteen.
