Based on estimates by NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, 2005 was the warmest year since reliable wide-spread instrumental measurements became available in the late 1800s, beating the previous record set in 1998 by a few hundredths of a degree Celsius. It was then replaced by 2007 as the warmest year .

Other researchers place 1998 at the top of the temperature record.
