For Keeps is a
1988 movie starring
Molly Ringwald and
Randall Batinkoff as Darcy and Stan, two high school seniors in love. Complications ensue when Darcy becomes
pregnant just before graduation and decides to keep her baby. The film is set in
Kenosha, Wisconsin and was partially filmed there. Primary location work took place in
Winnipeg, Manitoba,
Canada.
This movie is noted for being Ringwald's final "teen" movie, and is cited as one of her most mature performances, particularly in a scene where Darcy is suffering from post partum depression after the birth of her child.
Plot
Darcy, editor at her highschool paper, and her long-term boyfriend Stan are in their last months of school and already have found places in good colleges. Recently they started to sleep with each other and, surprise, surprise, Darcy gets pregnant. Neither Darcy's mother, who was left by her husband and had to bring up Darcy alone, nor Stan's Catholic parents are very supportive and urge them to have an abortion or give up for adoption. However, Darcy's and Stan's love is so intense, they could imagine having this baby, but this also means giving up their college dreams.
Later filming
Ironically, Molly Ringwald is currently starring in a new television show, titled The Secret Life of the American Teenager, where she plays a mother whose 15-year-old daughter is pregnant. Ringwald was not aware that this was the role she would be portraying, but is happy. She commented once saying that she is helping the lead character, Shailene Woodley, with her role, because she has played a similar role in this movie, For Keeps?.
