Fontanelle is a city in Summerset Township, Adair County, Iowa, United States. The population was 692 at the 2000 census.

Fontanelle is located at (41.289995, -94.562230).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 692 people, 305 households, and 186 families residing in the city. The population density was 775.6 people per square mile (300.2/km²). There were 328 housing units at an average density of 367.6/sq mi (142.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.42% White, and 0.58% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.58% of the population.

There were 305 households out of which 23.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.5% were married couples living together, 7.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.7% were non-families. 35.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 22.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.11 and the average family size was 2.70.

In the city the population was spread out with 20.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 19.4% from 25 to 44, 18.9% from 45 to 64, and 34.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 48 years. For every 100 females there were 76.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 76.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $31,328, and the median income for a family was $39,861. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,550 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,352. About 3.6% of families and 5.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.7% of those under age 18 and 4.8% of those age 65 or over.
