Fleurus, town (1991 pop. 22,507), Hainaut prov., S Belgium. It is a coal-mining and manufacturing center; domestic appliances, furniture, and machinery are produced. At Fleurus, Mansfield and Christian of Brunswick defeated (1622) the Spanish in the Thirty Years War, the French under Marshal Luxembourg defeated (1690) the Dutch and their allies in the War of the Grand Alliance, and the French under Jourdan defeated the Austrians in a decisive battle (1794) of the French Revolutionary Wars.

History

Traces of agriculture dating back to the Neolithic Age were found in area known as Fleurjoux and Neuve Baraque. During the Roman times, construction of roads like the (chaussée Brunehaut between Bavay and Cologne).

In October of 1155, Henry IV of Luxembourg, also Count of Namur freed the commune which became the city of Fleurus. Henry IV had a castle in Heppignies.
