Renault Estafette

The Renault Estafette was first introduced in 1959. The French company's small van is a very popular and much loved water-cooled, front-wheel-drive workhorse with range of body options that expanded over time and a a wide array of conversion possibilities including "camper vans".

At launch the engine, although mounted near the front of the Estafette, was of the same size and output as that fitted to the recently introduced Renault Dauphine. The Estafette's emphasis was always on economy and efficient load carrying rather than on speed or heavy duty performance.

The rear door on the standard van was in three sections, in a variation on the stable door principal. The upper part with the window hinged upwards, while the lower part was divided into two halves, opening to left and to right. A sliding door on the pavement side of the load space was also normally fitted.

History

Known documentation of what finally became the Estafette date back to 1957.
