Eso-Charis was a
Christian Mathcore band formed in
Fort Smith,
Arkansas. Founding members
Cory Brandan Putman, Matthew Putman, and Arthur Green eventually went on to join the band
Living Sacrifice. Eso-Charis was originally called "Elliot". After about two years of playing shows, the band changed their name because of other bands using the name Elliot. "Eso charis" in
Greek translates to "within or inside grace". In late
1997, the band recorded their first and only
full-length album with
Bruce Fitzhugh of
Living Sacrifice. The album was first produced independently, but was soon after leased to
Day-Glo Records of
Stockholm, Sweden. Later on, production of the album moved to
Solid State Records, the same label as
Living Sacrifice.
In February 1999, Matthew Putman and Arthur Green left the band to go to Living Sacrifice, who were in both of Living Sacrifice's two last albums before they took a 5 year break. Cory Brandan went on to the band Norma Jean. Jayson Holmes went on to form the band The Handshake Murders, which also featured Cory Putman as a brief guitarist.
