Diddle, Diddle, Dumpling, My Son John

Diddle, Diddle, Dumpling, My Son John is a nonsense children's nursery rhyme. According to Chris Roberts, author of "Heavy Words Lightly Thrown: The Reason Behind The Rhyme" (Granta Publications, 2004), the rhyme was written by John Evelyn.

Lyrics

Diddle, diddle, dumpling, my son John
Went to bed with his trousers on
One shoe off, and the other shoe on
Diddle, diddle, dumpling, my son John
