The show is about the Bannon family, who all have strong spy links. The parents, Dirk and Talia, were once arch enemy spys, but fell in love and got married. They now have three children (Spike, Elle and Boris) who have all been brought up with spy techniques as a matter of course. Spike's friend Travis(played by Richard Sargent) is commonly seen on the show.
The action is based in three major locations, the Bannon home, the children's school, and the local café, which is run by Des, Dirk's former Personal Ordinance Officer (gadget-master).

James Bond is heavily spoofed. Dirk Bannon is almost always seen wearing a dinner jacket of the type worn by the various James Bond actors. Gadgets of the sort that Q would issue are also used. Sometimes other spies are named, such as "Double-0-0", which uses the same naming convention used in James Bond, while individual episodes are titled using the same convention employed in 60's spy show 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E' - e.g. 'The Lock In Affair', 'The Dirky Dancing Affair', 'The Albovian Affair Affair' etc.
The theme music, which is very heavy on electric guitar, is reminiscent of many of the spy television series of the sixties and seventies .
