The Day of the Dead is a holiday celebrated in the country of Mexico as well as in other cultures worldwide. On this holiday, family and friends gather to pray for and pay homage to loved ones who have died.
Even though the name of the holiday would denote that it is a one day celebration, it actually takes place on two days; November 1 and 2. Those dates coincide with the Catholic celebrations of All Saint's Day on November 1 and of All Soul's Day on November 2.
Some popular traditions followed on The Day of the Dead are decorating private altars with sugar skulls, marigolds and many of the favorite foods and drinks of the departed loved ones. Celebrants also visit graves bearing similar gifts.
