Set in the logging industry in 19th century Wisconsin, the story follows the fortunes of Barney Glasgow, played by Arnold and his love affairs with a saloon keeper played by Farmer, and after an absence of many years, with her daughter, also played by Farmer.
The film was a success and the dual role of mother and daughter brought Farmer excellent reviews, and made her a star in her first year in films.
It won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in the first year the award was presented, to Walter Brennan. Edward Curtiss was also nominated for an Academy Award for Film Editing.
In her role as the saloon singer, Frances Farmer sings the ballad "Aura Lee
" (also called "Aura Lea
"), which twenty years later and with new lyrics became "Love Me Tender
", one of Elvis Presley
's earliest hits. During Farmer's 1957-58 comeback, she appeared on television's Ed Sullivan Show
at the same time Presley's version was topping the charts. Farmer performed the original version on her first Sullivan appearance in June, 1957.
