Isabel

Allende, Isabel, 1942-, Chilean novelist. Since the 1973 coup that deposed her uncle, President Salvador Allende Gossens, Isabel Allende, who is among the most notable contemporary Chilean writers, has lived abroad, for many of those years in California. Her fiction is distinguished by its fusion of traditional realism with political (including feminist) concerns. Her first and best-known novel, The House of Spirits (1982, tr. 1985), which reflects the influence of Gabriel García Márquez and the technique of magic realism, tells the story of a Chilean family over three generations. Allende's fiction also includes Of Love and Shadows (1984, tr. 1987); Eva Luna (1987, tr. 1988); The Infinite Plan (1991, tr. 1993), her first work set in the United States; Daughter of Fortune (1998, tr. 1999); Portrait in Sepia (2001); and Inés of My Soul (2006), the fictionalized life of a 16th-century conquistadora.

Bishop, Isabel, 1902-88, American painter, b. Cincinnati, Ohio. Influenced by the New York City painters of the 1930s, Bishop produced numerous paintings of working women. Her pensive nude studies, such as Nude—1934, demonstrate her understanding of delicate effects of light and shade.

Isabel, 1846-1921, princess imperial of Brazil; eldest daughter of Pedro II. She acted as regent in her father's absence. Her marriage to the comte d'Eu added to her own unpopularity and probably contributed to the growing republican sentiment of her time. Along with her father, she is remembered for her espousal of the cause of emancipation. On May 13, 1888, she signed the law abolishing slavery, which alienated the large landholders and precipitated the downfall of the empire. When Pedro II was deposed and exiled (1889), Isabel followed him to Paris with her family and spent the remainder of her life there.

Island, central Solomon Islands, western South Pacific Ocean. Located 50 mi (80 km) northwest of Guadalcanal, Santa Isabel is about 130 mi (209 km) long and 20 mi (32 km) wide at its widest point. Mount Marescot, rising 4,000 ft (1,219 m), is the highest peak. The island was under German control from 1886 to 1899; Rekata Bay on the northwestern coast was a Japanese military base during World War II. Coconut plantations and timber development are important to the economy.

Isabel is a city in Barber County, Kansas, United States. The population was 108 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Isabel is located at (37.468706, -98.551325).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.2 square miles (0.6 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 108 people, 46 households, and 31 families residing in the city. The population density was 429.9 people per square mile (166.8/km²). There were 53 housing units at an average density of 211.0/sq mi (81.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 93.52% White, 1.85% African American, 0.93% Native American, 0.93% from other races, and 2.78% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.93% of the population.

There were 46 households out of which 26.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.4% were married couples living together, and 32.6% were non-families. 30.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.94.

In the city the population was spread out with 22.2% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 19.4% from 25 to 44, 31.5% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $23,125, and the median income for a family was $27,917. Males had a median income of $24,375 versus $19,375 for females. The per capita income for the city was $12,795. There were 18.5% of families and 17.0% of the population living below the poverty line, including 36.4% of under eighteens and 6.9% of those over 64.
