Margaret of Austria as counselor. In 1518 he was made chancellor by the king of Spain, later Holy Roman Emperor
Charles V. A humanist and a scholar, Gattinara had much influence upon Charles, whom he urged to create a dynastic empire. Gattinara was made a cardinal in 1529.
