Whenever a coin is inserted it produces a sound that is associated with trains, such as a train's whistle blowing. When multiple coins are inserted, the sound is repeated.

It sometimes comes with the Lionel Wartime Freight Train and a Lionel blanket. The Lionel Coin Bank is frequently advertised on the Nickelodeon children's television network. It is not available in stores, only on television.
