The Ranch

See Ranch (disambiguation) The Ranch (located in Galena, Kansas, USA) was a legendary music club located on Route 66 just west of Galena, KS. Back in the 70's and 80's this was THE place for late-night festivities (closing time was 3:00 am). Top local and regional musical talents (such as Road Hog and Granny's Bathwater) were featured here weekly, and there was big draw from the metro area of Joplin, MO. The genre was mostly hard rock, and the entire scene had an "underground" feeling. Drugs and illegal activity abounded and eventually led to The Ranch's demise. Interesting to note is that, from an acoustical standpoint, this former skating rink had a solid oak flooring, which became the dance floor, and it resonated with the speaker cabinets of the band's sound system, consequently turning the entire place into a speaker cabinet. On many a night, the drug and alcohol-filled derelicts worked into a drinking and dancing frenzy, causing the 3:00 AM closing time to sneak up quickly. However, this closing time was ignored often and many times the band played right through 3:00 AM and the "after parties" sprang up both inside the locked doors and outside in the parking lot. The law seemed to ignore this situation (or maybe, at 3:00 AM on the outskirts of a tiny mining town, where nobody was bothered, nobody cared).
