Rochester-Genesee Regional Transit Service

The Regional Transit Service (or RTS) is a public transit subsidiary of the Rochester-Genesee Regional Transportation Authority located in Rochester, New York. The Regional Transit Service was historically known as the Rochester Transit Corporation since it was launched in 1946, and when the primary owner of RTS, which is the Rochester-Genesee Regional Transportation Authority, formed in 1967, the RTC was history. The majority of buses Rochester has been using throughout the years were manufactured from Flxible, GMC, Gillig, Orion, Nova Bus, New Flyer, and NABI. Other particular industries may include M-A-N, which is a foreign based company located in Europe, ElDorado National, and the Motor Coach Industries.

Fares

As of September 1, 2008, RTS has decreased it's fare from a $1.25 to a dollar, making it easier for customers to ride RTS. Their motto for this particular feature is now "Bus for a Buck", while it was previously "One Zone, One Fare" as of 2004, while the fare was still $1.25 since 1991.

Routes

Most Regional Transit Service (RTS) buses operate through Downtown Rochester, with layovers at Main & Clinton, Main & St. Paul, Clinton & Main, or Midtown Plaza (along Broad Street at the intercity bus station).

While in Downtown Rochester, buses fall into "line-up" position, in which passengers have the ability to connect to many other routes at the same time period. This can be common practice for smaller cities with fewer routes, but Rochester may carry the distinction of being one of the few larger scale cities to continuously do this.

Additionally, the bus shelters at these locations are equipped with display screens for passengers to be able to see when their next bus is scheduled to arrive.

Fleet

As of right now, Classics, D40 and 60LFs, 40-LFWs, ex-Houston METRO AN460s, and Advantages are covering the streets of Rochester, New York. Most of the buses that are currently here are powered by a Detroit Diesel straight-4 cylinder Series 50 engine, excluding the Gillig Advantages, which are powered by the Cummins straight-6 cylinder ISL engine. All other units that were powered by a Detroit Diesel 6V-92 engine were scattered to the winds, followed by units that were powered by a Detroit Diesel 6V or 8V-71 engine. Earlier in the past, such as the 70s and 80s, the majority of buses that Rochester purchased were from companies that closed due to bankruptcy such as the General Motors Corporation, and Flxible, but Rochester turned to Gillig and Orion, since the other reliable companies had shut down, for them to build and deliver Suburban Phantoms and 05.501s, which are no longer present in Rochester, with four Detroit Diesel Series 50 powered Orion 05.501s remaining, but still present throughout the United States.
