Pop Culture
Many jokes have been made about the
Beyond portion of the Bed Bath & Beyond name on television (
Family Guy,
Futurama,
Good Eats,
The Simpsons,
Will & Grace and
Yin Yang Yo!). The "
beyond" department is also prominently used in
Adam Sandler and
Christopher Walken's 2006 comedy film
Click. In this case, the door marked "Beyond" leads to a workshop helmed by Walken, with a door marked "Way Beyond" leading way to a massive
storage unit, which contained the
Universal Media Remote that he was looking for. Ironically, Sandler's character asked if there were any Universal Media Remotes, but there weren't.
911 Incident
In September 2008, police charged the manager of the
Lexington, Kentucky location with failure to "report dependency, neglect and abuse", a
misdemeanor. Customers had reported there was a three-year-old child locked in a hot
van in the store's parking lot, who wasn't responding to knocks on the van's windows. The customers asked to use the store's phone to call
9-1-1. Citing a corporate policy against getting involved with events in store parking lots, the manager refused to allow the call or use the store
intercom to attempt to contact the child's parents.
A cell phone was eventually used to call police, who broke the van's window and retrieved the child, whose mother was charged with first-degree child endangerment. A spokesperson for the company said they have no such policy preventing employees from helping people in store parking lots, and expressed disappointment the situation was not handled properly.
