The winner, Tokyo, had to give up the games to Helsinki because of the Second Sino-Japanese War. Eventually, the games were cancelled entirely due to World War II.

Though London won, like the 1940 games these were cancelled due to World War II.
1948 London
The ballots have not been published.
The other bidding cities were: Baltimore (USA); Lausanne (SUI); Los Angeles (USA); Minneapolis (USA); and Philadelphia (USA).

Equestrian competition (Stockholm)
Due to strict Australian horse quarantine laws of that time, the 1956 equestrian competition could not be held at Melbourne; thus another city was selected to host that competition.

Tehran,

Though Cortina d'Ampezzo won, these games were not held due to World War II.

A second decision was required because Denver was unable to host due to a negative referendum. Sion, the runner up, was unable to host because of lack of time. This meant that
Innsbruck, the host of 1964, received the games for a second time.

Vancouver withdrew its bid shortly before the decision and was no longer a choice in the voting. This left only one bidding city.

Several bidding cities were not accepted: Andorra la Vella (AND); Harbin (CHN); Jaca (ESP); and Sarajevo (B/H).
Bern (SUI) withdrew its bid, although it was accepted by the IOC.
2014 Sochi
Several bidding cities were not accepted: Almaty (KAZ), Borjomi (GEO), Jaca (ESP) and Sofia (BUL).
