The English suffix -cide denotes an act related to killing. From Latin caedere "to cut, kill, hack (at), strike". In its wider meaning, it may also signify the destruction or dismantling of an object or concept. When attached to a word indicating an animal or plant considered to be pestilent, the combined word is frequently used to indicate a substance used to eliminate the pest in question. E.g. Pesticide, insecticide and herbicide

A

  • Acaricide: The killing of mites and ticks, or a substance which performs this function.
  • Algaecide/Algicide: The killing of algae, or a substance which performs this function.
  • Autocide: death to oneself as caused by oneself (auto- derived from the Greek autos meaning self); cf. suicide (sui- derived from the Latin sui meaning of oneself). Alternatively, suicide by means of, especially crashing, one's automobile (auto- as a contraction of the word automobile — itself meaning self motion).
  • Avicide: The killing of birds, or a substance which performs this function.
  • Avunculicide: The killing of one's uncle.

  • Bactericide: The killing of bacteria, or a substance which performs this function.
  • Biocide: The killing of living material, or a substance which performs this function.
  • Barbicide : A chemical compound used by barbers to disinfect combs, brushes, etc.

C

  • Chronocide: The killing of time, something of a metaphor.

D

  • Deicide: Either the killing of a God or divine entity, or destruction or dismantlement of either the general concept of such beings, or a concept regarding a specific being, e.g. through critical thought, aka Nietzsche.
  • Democide: An act of killing perpetrated by a government. (literally killing cide of the people demos)

  • Genocide: The killing of a race or ethnic group.
  • Gendercide: The systematic killing of members of a specific sex.
  • Germicide: The killing of germs, or a substance which performs this function.
  • Gynaecide, gynecide: The killing of women.

  • Herbicide: The killing of plants, or a substance which performs this function.
  • Homicide: The killing of another human being.
  • Hobbitcide: The murder of a hobbit, described in J.R.R. Tolkien's fictional series, "The Lord of the Rings," first published in Great Britain by George Allan and Unwin in 1954.

  • Infanticide: The killing of infants.
  • Insecticide: The killing of insects, or a substance which performs this function.

  • Lampricide: a substance that kills lampreys (parasitic fish)
  • Larvicide: The killing of larvae, or a substance which performs this function.
  • Liberticide: The destruction of liberty.
  • Linguicide: The killing (i.e. dismantling or banishment) of a language.

M

  • Mariticide: The killing of one's spouse, generally in reference to the killing of one's husband.
  • Matricide: The killing of one's mother.
  • Microbicide: The killing of microbes, or a substance which performs this function.
  • Molluscicide: The killing of mollusks, or a substance which performs this function.

P

  • Parasuicide: A harmful act appearing to be an attempt at suicide.
  • Parenticide: The killing of one's parents.
  • Parricide: The killing of parents or close relatives.
  • Patricide: The killing of one's father.
  • Pesticide: The killing of pestilent species, or a substance which performs this function.
  • Policide: The intentional destruction of a city or nation.
  • Politicide: The killing of political entities, whether single persons or entire nations.
  • Prolicide: The killing of offspring, whether they be already born or still at a fetal stage.
  • Pseudocide : The fake killing of one's self.

  • Regicide: The killing of a monarch.
  • Rodenticide: The killing of rodents, or a substance which performs this function.

S

  • Senicide: Putting of the elderly to death.
  • Sororicide: The killing of one's sister.
  • Spermicide: The killing of sperm, or a substance which performs this function.
  • Suicide: The killing of oneself.

T

  • Taeniacide: The killing of tapeworms, or a substance which performs this function.
  • Technocide: The killing(i.e. destruction) of technology.
  • Terracide: The killing of the planet Earth.
  • Trypanocide: The killing of trypanosomes, or a substance which performs this function.
  • Tyrannicide: The killing of tyrants.
  • Tomecide: The killing of books

U

  • Urbicide: Destruction of urban area i.e. city or town.
  • Uxoricide: The killing of one's wife.

V

  • Vaticide: The killing of a prophet.
  • Vespacide: The killing of wasps, or a substance which performs this function.
  • Viricide: The killing of viruses, or a substance which performs this function.
  • Vivicide: The destruction and caused cessation of any and/or all forms of life; not dependent on quantity, severity or scale of annihilation; suffice it that life was stopped intentionally.
  • Vulpicide: The killing of a fox by means other than hunting with hounds.

X

  • Xenocide: The killing (i.e. a genocide) of an entire foreign sentient species, or the killing of a foreigner.
